I almost deleted this comment - but I decided it is important for people to see why I do this work. John - if you happen to read my comment - gender role pressures impact both men and woman and both can be homophobic - I agree with you her. Gay fatigue and fatigue in general is something we all need to be aware of - checking out of a discussion or an issue because we tire of the topic doesn't make people's lived experiences different - I agree with you here too. You don't need to validate a transwoman's identity as a woman - and it would be the most respectful thing to do - but you don't have to do anything expect maybe not hurt her or someone else because it makes you uncomfortable. Deception is a cruel and painful reality for a lot of people including rape survivors regardless of the gender identity of their rapist.

Implying that everyone who is macho is "homophobic" and implying that only men can be homophobic(last i checked women can be homophobic and don't act "macho")..I would argue that a lot of resentment towards gays is the fact that their lifestyle is being forced on people via government, media and Hollywood..i think it's called "gay fatigue". As for transphobia to me that goes without saying..i would not call a man who thinks he's a woman a woman..and the fact that there have been cases of rape by deception from transexuals is the main cause of transphobia

good point - it is interesting to be in an attempt to support multiple people's preferred language - the limitations of language - don't fit for everyone. I know folks that prefer to be called intersexed, others that identify as having an intersex condition, and yet other's who say they are born with atypical birth defects.

Thanks for writing this list! May I suggest that another thing that can be done to be a great ally to intersex people is stop using the word "condition"? See the following:

The Intersex Network - Please stop using the language of disease to describe intersex if you wonder why medicine wants to “cure” intersex

Here is another: Don't pretend that intersex is a medical condition. It isn't. It is simply a range of natural biological variations in sex.

Totally agree that often these two groups are conflated together incorrectly - this list is about how cis people, and lgbt cis people often mess this up - the list is about the common mistakes that are made in both of these groups...

You’re right, you’re absolutely right. Out of context lots of things said of done seem heinous.
However, here’s my calculus on the situation:
-The actions of one of the Fraternity Men made many many many women (and men) on this campus feel unsafe. When you trust UVM to be a safe environment, little things that upset the balance can have dire consequences for the mentality of the whole.
While the guy stepped up certainly deserves a pat on the back and probably some free food for being so genuine... my feelings go to the women and men disturbed by the actions of a few. What they lose when situations like this occur is not a few privileges: A house, some letters, and time to share with friends... Their world collapses. The place they thought was safe for them all of the sudden isn't.
While it's not totally balanced, I err on the side of safety.

I think you'd be interested in a Water Tower article written a year ago, had the same themes and the University handled it differently. As a matter of fact so did I. I'm still trying to square how I could come out differently on these two issues.

Love to hear your thoughts,

Thank you for writing this blog.

This is great! Thanks for sharing. I had an experience over the holidays about some of the same things. I was at a higher-end shopping location where announcements were given in English and in French; despite hearing no French-speaking people, but hearing plenty of Spanish, German and Mandarin speaking people.
